Thank you so much to Amy, Katie , Heather , Lily and the rest of the team at @depotartspace for everything.

Depot Art space is a non for profit group , who funded this project . Grateful for the experience under their guidance to collaborate , organise and co curate this amazing show , together @karlalisehorstmansart and @traceycoakleyart

And a huge shout out to the amazing artists, without them we wouldn’t have had such a high calibre of art to put together for this group exhibition .

We both had a vision to showcase what New Zealand has on offer with the genre of figurative and portrait art . And this is only a selection of some amazing talent out there !

We have been blown away by so much positive feedback we have received through other artists and the gallery , with the visitors that have been through , while it was on for the 6 weeks .

Thank you to those that were able to go in and see it in person , and to those that brought some of the art . Supporting the gallery and the artists .

Through this journey Karlalise and myself have learnt a lot and made some wonderful new friendships.

To us the success of the show was the positive feedback back , artists supporting each other and the beautiful connections we have made . It was a huge undertaking for us both while also doing our own creative practice and juggling our family commitments. But super glad we had this opportunity.

Please keep following us , if we are able to secure another large space for 2028 (?). You never know we might be able to do it again 🤔

“This self portrait came to me through the emotions of getting older and watching my children grow up. Looking down at photographs of my children from past to present . Aware my eldest is closer to leaving the nest . My youngest just reaching teenage years . As an older mum , I’m also in my 50’s dealing with change, hormones and at the same trying to reclaim apart of myself, finding my way through my art .
I’m wearing a summer dress , as my favourite season , sitting on patterned fabrics. The open art book reflects my love for figurative art. The sketchbook and paint brushes lay nearby ready to create”

BETWEEN US
Waipu artist Tracey Coakley has co-organised one of the more ambitious group exhibitions to open in Auckland this year - and she’s not alone in flying the flag for the region.
Tracey Coakley, a figurative artist based in Waipu, is one of two organisers and guest curator of Between Us, a portrait and figurative group exhibition now showing at DEPOT Artspace in Devonport. Developed alongside Devonport artist Karlalise Horstmans following a successful proposal submitted in August last year, the exhibition brings together 28 artists and 90 works exploring identity and lived experience through contemporary figurative art and portraiture.

Waipu artist Tracey Coakley has co-organised one of the more ambitious group exhibitions to open in Auckland this year - and she’s not alone in flying the flag for the region.
Tracey Coakley, a figurative artist based in Waipu, is one of two organisers and guest curator of Between Us, a portrait and figurative group exhibition now showing at DEPOT Artspace in Devonport. Developed alongside Devonport artist Karlalise Horstmans following a successful proposal submitted in August last year, the exhibition brings together 28 artists and 90 works exploring identity and lived experience through contemporary figurative art and portraiture.

This workshop will provide the opportunity for all skill levels to learn about the gesture and forms of the human figure, drawing from live models with guided lessons from artist Mark Whippy.
 Tickets are $30.
  Refreshments will be provided by our hospitality partner Toi Toi Wines.
This workshop is suitable for adults.
Koha will be accepted upon entry.

About Mark Whippy
Mark’s art is inspired by observing the ordinary everyday people and scenes of his environment. Hoping to capture their stories and characters, finding the beauty of every day life. Mark’s style is a playful blend of realism and abstraction. His focus currently has been on the urban environment of Auckland City life. As well as being a practicing artist, Mark has a passion for teaching art and helping others grow with their skills. He teaches Drawing and Storytelling at AUT and has been teaching portrait and figure drawing at Studio One since 2022.
Mark studied at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design from 2013 - 2015, he then studied online through American based school Watts Atelier of the Arts for another 3 years. Mark is part of the growing Life Drawing and Urban Sketching communities in Auckland and has been taking part in Life Drawing since 2014. In 2019 Mark was selected as a finalist in the 2020 Adam Portraiture Awards and 2019 Kumeu Art Awards. His portrait ‘Lion Man’ was selected to go on the Adam Portraiture Awards national tour. In 2022, he made his solo exhibition debut at Studio One Toi Tu titled “Auckland Under Construction”. Where he also began teaching portrait classes. Some of Marks artistic influences are Steve Huston, Jeffery Watts, Will Yu, Zhaoming Wu, Richard Schmid, Edward Hopper.

Here’s a brief overview of us delivery the works to the venue , and unpacking and discussion, constant reshuffling 😅 and hanging

Such an AMAZING team at @depotartspace 💪 they worked tirelessly since last week organising the catalogue , online and hard copy , and got the online shop live last night 🙌🏻.

They all work so well together as a team , so professional and respectful . We are so grateful they gave us , @karlalisehorstmansart and @traceycoakleyart ,the opportunity to be co curators with such an epic project .

We are also thankful for Tracey’s husband Darren , Depot Artspace technician Matt ( who kept us amused ) , @jamiechapman_painting for all the assistance to hang and discuss ideas with , we all made a great team ourselves ✊Also thank you to Heather from Depot for her guidance . Katie for all her assistance, cross referencing with work coming in on the day , admin ,and keeping us up to date with the paperwork required for such a large show 😜. And supplying snacks to the hanging team 😂
