Artist Biography

Sally was born and raised in Whangarei, New Zealand. She has a life-long love of drawing and painting. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts, majoring in Printmaking. She then went on to work in jewellery design and retail in central Auckland, before moving back to Whangarei in 2011 to start a family. She currently works part time at Whangarei Quarry Gardens, and spends every spare moment in her home studio. She exhibits in galleries and takes commissions.

Artist Statement

Sally paints portraits and figures in watercolours and oils. Sally's dedication to painting people is due to her fascination with the endless variety of personality, expression, gesture, and beauty of the human form. She uses warm, dramatic lighting and careful composition to draw the viewer into a scene, creating a sense of both intimacy and mystery. She likes to portray subtle expressions and mannerisms, leaving the narrative open to interpretation.
